Heart Your Family's Guide to Understanding the Heart

Stroke Symptoms

A stroke, or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is disrupted, causing brain cells to die. When blood flow to the brain is impaired, oxygen and glucose cannot be delivered to the brain. Blood flow can be compromised by a variety of mechanisms. Stroke is one of the killer accidents occurring mostly in the US and a part in Asia. The causes of stroke are many and various. Every individual is different and therefore no one stroke is ever the same as another. The ischemic stroke is usually caused by atherosclerosis (hardening) of blood vessels, embolus (a piece of blood clot originating from atherosclerotic plaque or heart) or small artery disease (the occlusion of small cerebral vessels).

The blockage of an artery in the brain by a clot (thrombosis) is the most common cause of a stroke. The part of the brain that is supplied by the clotted blood vessel is then deprived of blood and oxygen. As a result of the deprived blood and oxygen, the cells of that part of the brain die. Typically, a clot forms in a small blood vessel within the brain that has been previously narrowed due to a variety of risk factors including: high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, diabetes, and smoking.

Symptoms of stroke are the sudden onset of having:

  • Numbness, weakness, or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg, typically on one side of the body
  • Trouble seeing in one or both eyes, such as dimness, blurring, double vision, or loss of vision.
  • Confusion, trouble understanding.
  • Slurred or garbled speech.
  • Trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  • Severe headache.

Symptoms vary depending on whether the stroke is caused by a clot or bleeding. The location of the blood clot or bleeding and the extent of brain damage can also affect symptoms. Symptoms of an ischemic stroke (caused by a clot blocking a blood vessel) usually occur in the side of the body opposite from the side of the brain where the clot occurred. For example, a stroke in the right side of the brain affects the left side of the body.

Symptoms of a hemorrhagic stroke (caused by bleeding in the brain) can be similar to those of an ischemic stroke but may be distinguished by symptoms relating to higher pressure in the brain, including severe headache, nausea and vomiting, neck stiffness, dizziness, seizures, irritability, confusion, and possibly unconsciousness. Symptoms of a stroke may progress over minutes, hours, or days, often in a stepwise fashion. For example, mild weakness may progress to an inability to move the arm and leg on one side of the body.

  • If a stroke is caused by a large blood clot (ischemic stroke) or bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke), symptoms occur suddenly, within seconds.
  • When an artery that is narrowed by atherosclerosis becomes blocked, stroke symptoms usually develop gradually over minutes to hours, or (in rare cases) days.
  • If several smaller strokes occur over time, the person may have a more gradual change in walking, balance, thinking, or behavior (multi-infarct dementia).

It is not always easy for people to recognize symptoms of a small stroke. They may mistakenly think the symptoms can be attributed to aging, or the symptoms may be confused with those of other conditions that cause similar symptoms.

Never disregard small stroke attacks. It may lead to a more severe stroke attack in the future.

I have had a lot of these symptoms lately. They just come on out of no where. Some times last or days. But I take my nitro then they disappear by the third one. I have numbness on my left side. And told my doctor that this has been going on. And all he did was change my blood pressure med, and check my B.P.. Is this a normal response? Do I need to see someone else? Im only 34. But My dad passed on at 53 with the same heart problems as I. I am scared! What do I do to prevent this from happening more. I had these same symptoms twice last week alone. Can anyone help?

Hello
About 2 weeks ago I had fallen and landed on my right upper arm. A rock cut me and hit a vein. It bled quit a bit but stopped after I applied presure and ice. About 13 yrs prior I had broken the wrist on the same arm and have pins. Anyways, my arm has continued to ache and you can see the vien pretrude from the elbow to the wrist.
I have had severe headaches and yesterday my jaw felt like it was detached and I became very dizzie and confused. I am 54 years old and my father died at 57 with a heart attack. What do you think I need to do.

My wife had two small strokes last year but didn't have any of the physical problems related to strokes, loss of the use of one side of her body, numbness and that sort of thing. Her vision and memory took the hardest hits. Her memory got better over a period of a couple months but her vision never recovered.

She had a T. I. A. two days ago and is now showing some of the signs of stroke, partial loss of her right arm and leg and sluring of her speach. Above is a post from someone saying that nitro helps the symptoms. Where do we stand and what can I do between Doctors visits?

about a week ago my left side of my neck down my back to my ankle hurt really bad. I could barely walk or move. I got better after two days of rest. Yesterday I had a really bad headache that i think was a migraine. I had major pressure on Only the left side of my head, neck, shoulder all the way down to my leg. I woke up this morning with a busted blood vessel in my right eye and still have minimal pressure on my left side of the body & my head. Are these stroke symptoms or just old age. Im only 36. I also feel very tired.

in 2006, I had a spell, lasting about 5-10 mins. in which I lost cognizance of where I was or what I was doing. (I was driving a car at the time). There were no after effects, and no warning of the onset. I was diagnosed as having had aTIA and prescribed Aggrenox BID. Last February I had an auto accident and don't recall anything
after making a Rt. turn, about 1/2 mile before the accident. was knocked unconcious in the wreck and hospitalized for 8 days with numerous tests, nothing was diagnosed, but an ICD was installed on my left chest. In Mid Nov. I had an episode where I lost cognizance for a few Mins. In early Dec. I again lost awareness while driving, but responded to my wife's request that I pull into a space and let her drive. I don't recall any of that. I have been seen a Neurologist and he's done several test, but I have't heard from him yet. There is never any warning and I have complete functionality afterwards. I have voluntarily given up driving until something is resolved. Can anyone suggest anything which might cause this?

I have for the last coupler days been having sharp pains in my upper right arm, only comes after I take my back pain meds. Now today I notice like my feet both are a little swollen in the same area, on top look like two small lumps on the top of both of my feet. Oh goodness not another problem. I already have 3 degenrated discs in my back, I do not need something else going wrong with me. Please can somone collaberate on this for me. Thank you and by the way Merry Christmas To All.

On Tuesday night about 7:30pm on Dec. 22, 2009, I was driving around Atlanta Loop, I am a truck driver. All of a sudden I had major dizziness and problems focusing on objects. I also had vision problems. this only lasted about 15 min. Then I had a major headache after wards.
Could have been a TIA. I do have a major blood pressure problem, without meds it runs about 185/115.
I have also had 3 minor heart attacks. Please collaborate on this for me.

Rita62 27.12.09 at 17:24pm
I have had a severe headache for over 25 days. I have seen a neurologist, and he ordered
MRI/MRA, results were no abnormalities; however the headache still persists. I am taking pain pills, but they just do not seem to be working. I have also been prescribed a pain patch. I do not really see any result from either.

My vitamin D level was found to be very low, and I am taking a prescription. Do you think this has anything to do with my continuous headache?
Thank you.

I am a 54 year old female. I was exercizing on Wednesday and noticed that a few minutes into it, I had the most aweful pain flood up into my head and lasted about 20 - 25 minutes. My husband was home, thankfully and heard me crying outloud. He laid me down on the bed to relax and I soon became nauseated. I have a history of hypertension 180/115 but on this day, it was 213/115. He gave me my meds and then I went to sleep for awhile. On Saturday, I got up and ready to take a ride out of town and just after we arrived, I went through the same ordeal only the ambulance took me to the hospital. Triage looked me over and stated that they thought that I had suffered a hemmoragic stroke. I have not had any complications besides the severe headaches. Does this sound like a stroke?

my left side of my arm fells real heavy and i fell a little sick

Jackie 06.01.10 at 11:27am
I really don't know if I had a mini stroke, but what happened was I woke up with my my left arm heavy. My right leg heavy both were numb to the point were I couldn't feel them, I was very sick to my stomach, and my vision was blurred to the point I couldn't read anything. I have weak legs and loose my balance all the time, so when I went to the living room I thought nothing of it. I did have a headache behind my eyes and it was strong, it brought tears. But, later in the afternoon, and for three days after I have been very tired to the point were I'll sleep from 12pm-6ishpm go to bed at 10pm sleep till 7am and fall back asleep around 12ishpm till 6ishpm. What I'm wanting to know is this come with mini strokes? I know the numbness in the arms and leg and vision and headache is, but the tiredness is what I'm wanting to know about or the side effects after having a mini stroke? Jackie

Yester day I was diagnosed as having a small stroke on the right side of my head near the front. I had had several weeks of blured vision, stumbling to the left, diffiuliculty in talking and thought process. I also had a spike in bloodpressure, and sugar reading. I have very low Iron and at the time I was having a bout with plurasey with a lot of pain in breathing and did not think of a stroke. Could the low iron have caused this. My doctor is going to watch me.

Symptoms - 10 seconds or maybe longer - head felt really strange, sort of like an electric shock - thought I was going to faint, but did not. When it was over, I felt fine. What do you think it was?

My mother is 53. She recentley has become very sick. She is numb on one side of her face her head face and throat are swallen, she has blured vision, nausia, dizziness, sudden severe headaches, high blood pressure, and on and off rapid heart beat. At first doctors said that she had bells palsey. But then they decided it wasn't that. Then they thought she had a mini stroke, but after tests they decided that wasn't it. They then thought that she had some kind of blockage in her brain. After doing a mri and cat scan they said that they found nothing there. So they now have no idea what it is. Does anyone know what this could be? She is in alot of pain, and is very sick. I'm scared for her. If anyone has any suggestions could you send me an email. Thank you.

I have been feeling very tired lately and I was at work the other night and I just had a strange feeling as if something was wrong. Then I got a extreemly bad headache out of nowhere that lasted for hours and about 4 hours into the headache I laid back and tried to rest for a few and then my entire face went numb and my mouth got dry. Then my entire body went really numb and both of my hands locked up somewhat I mean i could move then just REALLY slow and not exactly in the motion I wanted and then my mouth did the same thing. One side of my mouth was completely locked and I couldnt talk to let someone know. I had bellspaulsy when i was young but it went away except for slight lazy eye. Does this sound like a stroke or something different. I am 21 years old.

My 28-year old son just called me as he was leaving the hospital. He was experiencing numbness and tingling in his right leg and over a 40 minute time period the numbness and tingling moved upwards through the right side of his body, started in his right foot and he could feel it slowly moving up, and when it moved up the part underneath it was not numb anymore. The hospital did a CAT scan and didn't show a thing, there was no explaination for this, only that it could be stress. I believe that there has to be a better answer than that. What are your thoughts. Stroke, nerve damage from prediabetes? He is basically healthy, doesn't smoke or drink, no drugs, healthy weight. He is a teacher so I understand the stress part, but my brain just isn't accepting that answer. Thanks for any insight.

When I woke this morning, the right side of my face by my lip was numb and tingling. It aslo turned bright red and was warm to the touch. When touched it felt normal but when not touched it continued tingling for some time. Is this a serious sign I should be concerned about?

My mom has vascular dementia. Last summer she had a small hemorragic stroke. The only symptom was loss of short term memory. Because of the dementia, it went virtually unnoticed, but I knew something was wrong and insisted on an MRI which confirmed everything. Her dementia is progressing a much more rapid pace. She complains of her food tasting funny, and has developed an intermittent headache over her right and left eyes, however neither side hurts as the same time as the other. Many of the symptoms for stroke are the same as with a dementia patient, so no one really knows what to do. Could she be having small hemorrigic strokes. Because her dementia is getting worse she is more anxious, thereby elevating her BP. She is on BP medication. I don't know what to do. Can these symptoms be an indicator that a stroke is imminent or is it just the dementia getting worse? Any feedback would be most appreciated. I feel like I'm walking in the dark all the time.

question? can a stroke change a persons personality?

Trina 30.01.10 at 21:46pm
I'm Trina, 37, and one morning I woke up early in the morning with an intense headache circling my eyes down my neck which was stiffening every moment. i took 3 advil and laid down. awoke again with waves of nausea. I tried to stand up and get to the bathroom to vomit and fell on the floor. The vomitting was uncontrollable and after that I noticed the room was spinning, I was drenched in sweat and could not regain my balance enough to stand up. Too weak to drag myself back to the bedroom I lay on the bathroom floor for 12 hours. within 20 minute intervals the wave of nausea returned over and over again; and did so intermittenly for the next 48 hours. During the first 72 hour period I noticed my eyes involuntarily pulling or pulsating to one side. I was diagnosed with labrynthitis 3 days after attack; but the vertigo persisted for nearly 5 months. I could not drive, turn my head to the side without intense sensation of losing my balance and I continued to have what I call "bobble-head syndrome" or wild tremor when turing back to a front position. Still get that tremor sensation 8 months later perodically. I do not believe at 37yrs old I had an ear infection, as I had not had a bronchial infection or flu that year, as doctor explained would be the cause. After 3 weeks the vertigo persisted and I was advised by the doctor to get an MRI, which I didn't have insurance to do. I am now awaiting SSI assistance until I can afford insurance. could this have been a mini stroke, i wonder?

In September 2009, my right side went numb and when I went to the hospital they diagnosed me with Bells Paulsy. It was and is horrible. A week ago my left eye started going blurry where I couldn't see. A few days ago my left side went numb and I had chest pains. Also I was disoreinted. I went to the E.R. and had a stroke. I didn't take it seriously and I have 4 kids that were all over the place being watched. So the nurse was being mean to me, I complained and no one listened, so I left. I walked out the day after my stroke. I can't see out of my left eye. Its like when you get in a car on a cold day and your windows are fogged up. I still have chest pains and basically all of the above symptoms. People Im scared. What should I do. I don't have any real knowledge on what the before and after affects of a stroke is. Of course I got no discarge papers because I left. So what do I do. I was just in the hopital a few days before new years with a gollstone. I get to my doctor and she says, " ooh no big deal its not your gallblatter". Also no big deal with the Bells Paulsy too! So I figured sence the MRI & Catskan showed no bleeding to the brain, no big deal either. But why am I feeling like the above warning symptoms. Ooh boy if anyone wants to comment please do. I'd gladly take some positive advice. I'm wondering if anyone feels like you aren't comprehending things and retaining information as quick as you used to. I feel like that and I am very emotional. I cry a lot and I am very short tempered, jumpy, and angry. Please email me if you have any information or comments that could help me. God bless all of you and your health. My email address is mickeyvic@yahoo.com. Thank you, Michelle

For the past year I have had a lot of dizzy spells. I thought it was because of my medication I was taking for my back pain. I have stopped the meds for over 4 months now. I'm still getting dizzy. My family doctor says its vertigo. I went for testing and its not vertigo. The dizzy spells come on at any time. Even when I'm not doing anything. Is it possible that it could be signs of a stroke?? I don't have any headaches. I do have a slight ringing in my ears. The dizzy spells last anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. What should I do?

I took off work and rested my head still hurts but not as bad but my nose is still bleeeding on and off, and my arm hurts to the point I cant make a fist and had to take my rings off from swelling. My veins are also showing like vericose veins and normally they can't find my veins.I currently have no health insur. so if I'm just freeking myself out I don't want to go to hospital.

BARB 09.03.10 at 14:49pm
Go to the ER if you are having symptoms, even for what be a small (transient) stroke. The staff should attend to you quickly if you tell them you think your having stroke symptoms. They will take necessary steps to make the determination. If someone can go with you and help you describe your symptoms--great! Ladies, remember, birth control medicines are definitely a possible cause for stroke. My neurologist thinks the pill probably caused my first major (ischemic) stroke 5 years ago. I was blessed to recover my speech and use of motor skills. I do have difficulty with retaining some events in my memory and some comprehension. See a neurologist after a trip to the ER if your are diagnosed with a small stroke (mini-stroke/TIA) or major stroke (CVA)--as well as your family doctor. I experienced a TIA last week. at their requests, I am going to see both my family doctor and my neurologists. Remember to take your aspirin and/or blood thinner everyday!!! If you must take birth control medicine, ask your doctor about taking a blood thinner as well. While shopping for an iknk cartridge yesterday, I had trouble describing to the clerk what I wanted. She thought it was funny. I suppose because I look to be 35-40, she thought I was just "spacey". I silently forgave her for her ignorance and remembered that what matters is what I and God think of me--that I am a strong, courageous, loving, and beautiful woman.

Yesterday, in the late afternoon, i was driving home from work. When all of a sudden, i started seeing what looked like the outlines of littel diamonds. As i looked straight ahead they appeared in the lower left corner of myfield of vison. Ater i arrived home it got a bit worse, i saw movent in this same area of veiw where there was no movement. This lasted about 45 minutes, and then my vison cleared and seemed to be normal. Scared me.

The other day my mother was sitting in a chair having her hair done when the hairdresser noticed that her head twitched and she was non-responsive and had a glazed look on her face. they called her name and she did not respond right away , after a few seconds she was seemingly fine and had no clue why everyone was so concerned about her; and also had no idea she had this happen;and felt fine. Could this have been a mini-stroke? She has had a MRI which showed before having them, but we never knew what to look for.

A couple of weeks ago i experienced numbness on the right side of my face. It went away a few hours later, I looked up facial numbness but really couldnt find anything that I thought related . Today at work I experienced a feeling of tingling/numbness in my right shoulder and thought to myself this is weird, walked less than five feet and my whole right arm and face started tingling/feeling numb. This happened around 11:30 am, it is now 330p and i still have the numbness in my face and my right pinky. I am overweight and smoke. Could you please give me an indication of what this could possibly be asap . Thank you in advance, Traci

My wife has trouble when she walks but not all the time. We were out walking in the mall when her back bothered her and she tilted to one side.I sat her down for about 10 min. and she was fine. We went to a home show and this happened again but worse. She grab me and almost pulled me over. I sat her down again for about 10 min. and then she was alright. She has had these spells before. She had all kinds of test cat scan mris and nothing shows up. Could this be a sign of a mini strkes.

I am a 68 year old female. I recently had a heartattack
and had two stents placed in lower left side of my heart. I am doing great with my heart. I do have bad chlosteroil and high triglisterides also hypertension which I take meds to keep under control. I have bad headaches and migraines for years and take meds when I have them. I have neck and upper back problems. I had a MRI in Sept. of '09 that showed I have Brain shrinkage, alot of gray matter and have had several mini-strokes. Now to get to why I am writing, about two months ago my lower both legs and feet are burning like fire. it is as if I looked down at them I would see smoke coming from them. I have seen a neurologist and he has ordered blood work and a MRI of my lower back. Two nights ago,I was getting ready for bed and my vision felt strange. My left eye was ok,but with my right eye I was seeing double. It made me fell like it was crossed. This lasted approx. fifteen minutes, then went away. I took my BP and it was 139/114 and pulse 100. I really was not alarmed until yesterday I was driving to have my MRI and I felt alittle unfocused. I also had a hard time walking to the hospital as my feet and legs felt heavy and tired. Today I woke with a bad headache. Now what do you think something is wrong or should I ignore all of this. If anyone has had burning in their legs and feet please let me know what was their problem.

My husband woke up yesterday morning with a severe headache that brought him to the floor. He layed on the floor not able to get up. It lasted about 5 minutes the he got up and I gave him asprin. He felt better after about an hour. He was fatigue the reset of the day but did function normally. He won't let me take him to the ER. Could he have had a mini stroke. What should I do? Does he need to see a doctor today?

I am 71 year old female. I have been having events when Im gone for 20-30seconds. I'm confused when I come out of it. I loose concentration in the middle of sentenses. If Im looking for something I forget what Im looking for. No numbness that I have noticed.
