Heart Your Family's Guide to Understanding the Heart

Heart Attack

Heart attack which is clinically known as myocardial infarction and sometimes also called coronary thrombosis or coronary occlusion is caused by having part of the heart muscle damaged. It usually occurs because the blood supply to the heart muscle is greatly reduced or stopped.

Just like all organs of the body, the heart requires constant blood supply. The blood that it gets passes through the arteries which lead the blood from the heart to the cells, tissues, and organs of the body.

There are cases though when plaque, a collection of cells deposited on the walls of the artery, builds up and over time it becomes larger and larger. Eventually, this will cause for a great reduced in the amount of blood reaching the heart. Sometimes, there are cases where the plaque has entirely close off the artery and the blood supply to the heart is completely cut off, in such cases, heart cells die and heart attack occurs.

While heart attacks can occur at any time, it occur more in the morning between 4:00 AM and 10:00 A.M. which can be seen as due to the adrenal glands releasing higher blood levels of adrenaline during the morning hours and increased adrenaline may contribute to rupture of cholesterol plaques.

As heart attack can be fatal, it is always best to take preventive measures in order to avoid it. Below are some suggestions given so as heart attack may be prevented.

It's better for you not to smoke.

It is best to quit smoking as smoking hastens the process of atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) which leads to heart attack.

Have your blood cholesterol level be checked?

It is advisable to have your blood cholesterol level checked regularly and if bad cholesterol level is undesirably high you can have your doctor prescribe you a medication as well as changes in your diet should be made.

Monitor and control your blood pressure.

Have your blood pressure taken every two years or as your doctor recommends it.

Have a regular exercise - Exercise helps improve heart muscle function and it also helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Maintain a healthy weight - Excess weight strains your heart and it may even contribute for you to have high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Make sure to eat a balance and healthy diet - As having too much saturated fat and cholesterol in your diet can narrow the arteries in the heart it is advisable to limit having these in your diet.

Manage how you cope up with stress - Reducing stress reduces the chance of heart attack. Find healthy ways in dealing with stressful events in your life.

Moderate your intake of alcohol - Having one to two drinks a day can be fine but having more can lead to high blood pressure.

Is red wine intake advisable for people with heart problems?

Drinking red wine is good for the heart, at least if not abusively. There are doctors who recommend red wines but not purely for medical purposes. It must still be consulted with the doctors.

I have been fatigued and often sleep up to 17 hours a day. My potassium has been consistantly low over the past several months. I have chronic kidney stones - pass an average of 4 or more per year (have for the past 20 years). I have been treated with high blood pressure in the past (lately, without meds, it's pretty stable at 135-140 over 85). I have had irregular ekg's in the past, but have also had normal ones. I have had irregular heart beat in the past and been hosptialized for up to two days for it at a time.

My father had a heart attack in his early 40's, had a quad bypass in his late 50's, stroke in his 60's, an aortic anerism in his lat 60's (got to 5cm, but he died of a massive heart attack before his anyerism could kill him). My sister is 56 and just had a quad bypass and appears to need a pace maker. My daughter had a stroke at age 26. I just turned 50 years old. A sleep study found my sleeping to not be a problem. I seriously go to bed within 9 hours of rising in the morning and can (and often do) sleep 4-6 hours before waking up to eat - then go back to bed.

I can't seem to get any help with this and I am scared to death (almost literally). What should/can I do?
